Why Your Scissors Might Be Damaging Hair (And How to Fix It)
Split ends two weeks after a fresh cut? The problem might be in your hand, not your technique. Five causes of scissor damage, how to spot each one, and the fix.
Your client comes back three weeks later and the ends already look tired. You did everything right — sectioning, elevation, balance. So you blame the hair, the products, the weather. It’s worth checking the one thing that touched every single strand: your shear.
The short answer
Most scissor damage comes from five things: a dull edge, loose tension, the wrong blade for the technique, dirty or corroded blades, and soft, cheap steel. Every one of them is fixable — and most can be prevented with two minutes of care a day.

1. A dull edge
A sharp edge severs the hair cleanly. A dull one compresses the shaft first, then breaks it — leaving a ragged, open end that’s far more likely to split. It’s the most common cause of scissor damage and the easiest to miss, because it happens gradually.

2. Loose tension
If the pivot is too loose, the blades flex apart as they close and hair slips between them instead of being cut. Sharp blades can still fold hair if the tension is wrong.
Fix: check it weekly. Hold the shear vertically by the finger ring, open the thumb blade fully and let it fall: it should drop smoothly and stop part-way, not swing closed. Our Foundation Series and 303 Thinner are hand-adjustable, no key needed.
3. The wrong blade for the technique
A bevel edge grips hair — brilliant for scissor-over-comb, terrible for slicing, where it will grab and tear. Slide cutting needs a smooth convex edge, ideally one designed for it.
Fix: match the shear to the job. For slicing, The Vasco’s dynamic blade is blunted through two-thirds of its length so it glides without grabbing. For blending, use a blender rather than forcing a cutting shear.
4. Dirty or corroded blades
Product residue creates drag and, over time, can start to corrode the edge. Barbicide soaks and damp storage make it worse.
Fix: wipe after every client, oil the pivot daily, clean with a little isopropyl alcohol weekly, and never leave shears soaking overnight. The full routine is in How to Clean and Maintain Your Professional Scissors.
5. Soft, cheap steel
Some shears simply can’t hold an edge fine enough for clean cutting for long. If yours doesn’t state its steel, that’s your clue.

Can thinning scissors damage hair?
Used too close to the scalp or too often in one place, yes — that’s technique rather than the tool. A dull thinner will also chew the ends. See our thinning guide.
How do I know if it’s the shear or the hair?
Cut a few strands of dry hair slowly near the tip. A sharp, well-tensioned shear cuts cleanly with no push. If the hair folds or slips, it’s the shear.
Can a damaged edge be saved?
Usually. Small nicks and a worn edge can be restored in a professional service.
