Why Steel Grade Matters
When you're investing in professional scissors, the steel grade is one of the most important factors to consider. It determines how sharp the blade gets, how long it holds that edge, and how resistant it is to corrosion and wear.
The most common steel you'll see on professional scissors is 440C stainless steel. Here's what that means and why it matters.
What is 440C Steel?
440C is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel — one of the hardest grades of stainless steel available. It's used across industries that demand precision cutting edges, from surgical instruments to professional kitchen knives.
For scissors, its key properties are:
- High hardness — 440C typically achieves 58–60 HRC (Rockwell hardness), giving it excellent edge retention
- Corrosion resistance — the chromium content protects against rust and moisture damage in a salon or barbershop environment
- Sharpenability — 440C takes and holds a very fine edge, making it ideal for convex blade scissors
- Durability — with proper care, 440C scissors last for years of professional daily use
440C vs. Other Steel Grades
440C vs. VG-10
VG-10 is a premium Japanese steel used in high-end scissors and kitchen knives. It contains vanadium in addition to chromium and carbon, which gives it superior edge retention compared to 440C — meaning it stays sharper for longer between sharpenings.
VG-10 is harder to manufacture and more expensive, which is why it's reserved for premium products like the 303 Thinner.
440C vs. Cobalt Steel
Cobalt steel is an ultra-hard alloy used in specialist cutting tools. It holds an edge even longer than VG-10 and is exceptionally resistant to wear. The Vasco uses super cobalt steel for its demanding dual-function slicing blade.
440C vs. Budget Stainless Steel
Many entry-level scissors use lower grades of stainless steel (such as 420 or 430 grade). These are softer, dull faster, and don't hold a fine edge as well. If your scissors came without a steel grade specification, they're likely not 440C.
What to Look for When Buying
- Always check the steel grade is specified — reputable manufacturers will always state it
- 440C is the minimum standard for professional scissors worth investing in
- For thinning scissors used daily, consider VG-10 for better long-term edge retention
- For specialist slicing or texturing work, cobalt steel offers the ultimate performance
